packages?

Hi, I used to use parallelKNOPPIX years ago.  I'm new to PelicanHPC.  I was looking on the website for what packages are included and did not find a list other than Octave and MPITB.  I'm wondering if you still support sciPy and can do parallel processing in python?

Yes, python, scipy, matplotlib and pyMPI (the lampython package) are all installed. I have yet to do any testing of the python stuff on Pelican, but I expect that it will work the same as on PK - the packages are the same. I believe that one could take the examples on PK and run them on Pelican with very little trouble. I'm including the packagelist from my current development version (same as released, but adds ifenslave to allow channel bonding).

OK, that's good to know!  Is there a packages.txt file on the pelicanHPC website then?   I did not see it there.

Anyway, perhaps you could advise me.  Until recently I had used openMOSIX (QUANTIAN) and MPI (parallelKNOPPIX) with C++ for Scientific Computing.  That was when I had a simple cluster made up of 25 Pentium IIIs.  Now I find myself with a hybrid cluster of 25 dualcore 64bit PCs, is MPI still the best solution?  

I was thinking of using parallelJava or a pyMPI, but what about a 64bit OS?  PelicanHPC comes in 32bit and 64bit flavors, right?  Would I see any gains in processing speed using a 64bit OS?  

I've used openMOSIX to cluster 25 Pentium III PCs.  I've used parallelJava to run my code on mutilple cores in one PC.  How do I get all 50 cores to work together?

What do you think?

No, there's no package list except for the one I posted in this thread. This is because Pelican is designed to be easily customizable by adding package names to the make_pelican script. The released version is intentionally minimalistic, since it is expected that users will add the packages that they need. What's on the released version is a barebones setup that gets a cluster running, plus some stuff that I am biased towards.

If your hardware is all 64 bit, then I recommend the 64 bit version. That's what I run, so it has more testing from me. To use both cores on each of 25 machines, just do mpirun -np 50 <etc> and specify that all 25 machines are to be used (method differs according to which MPI implementation you use). About using Java, I don't know much, perhaps someone with experience using Java and Pelican can help. I know that such people are out there...

The octave stuff on the CD includes things that I have written that are in some Octave Forge packages, but I put the stuff on directly, rather than installing o-f packages. The included stuff is bfgsmin, samin, and the econometrics stuff (mle, gmm, kernel, etc.). Otherwise, there are no other o-f packages. As noted, it is (relatively) easy to add stuff like this by making a custom image.

OK, OK, I get it!  I'll figure out the script next year, as my school is closing down this week, with my advanced students....

You know its ironic, I've been using debian on dualboot PCs forever.  Now for the first time my kids are trying to persuade me to use Fedora instead....  I'll have to have at least one PC with a minimal debian partition to make use of your debian-live scripts.  

I think I'd like to make my own flavor of pelicanHPC, perhaps shadowfaxHPC (name of my cluster), that includes some more octave-forge stuff, Sage/dSage and maybe R.  

Love what you've done with Octave and MPITB!
